God did I love this. Shesheshen is the autistic asexual representation that the world did not know that it needed. She is the hero we need but not the one we deserve. Having so many queer, disabled, and neurodivergent people in my life I could so easily see them in this character. The only reason I'm not giving it a 5 is due to some confusion I had about the plot midway through that ultimately resolved itself. This may be alleviated on a reread. Even if not, occasional plot conundrums and all, I loved this one dearly.

I came to it as a local bookstore recommended it for fans of What We Do In the Shadows and they were spot on in that analysis.

3 - This was weird. Well executed for what it was going for but weird.

The monster truly felt like a monster (at least physically). There are a lot of visceral body / eating descriptions veering into body horror that I was not a huge fan of.

I also thought it was a bit long and dragged in the middle. In the end I did think the romance was sweet(?) and its exploration of the impact of living in an abusive family was well done.

Not really my thing? But well written and definitely will work for someone else.

4 stars on the face of it, but rounded up to 5 because, in my 33 years and many hundreds of books read, my aroace self has never felt so seen.

Like really, it's the first time I've ever felt someone truly understands. "I clearly love you and care for you and want to be your partner forever but I explicitly DON'T want to kiss you and in fact don't like the concept of kissing at all; can we just like be near each other always, with maybe a comforting touch?" The vibe of this is “ A heart’s a heavy burden.”

I don’t want to say too much. I feel like it’s best to go into this not knowing anything. I loved every single second of it.

gah what a cute/gory book. no i have never said those two words to describe a book and this may be the only one that fits into these categories haha. the storyline was very interesting and kept me reading. i also loved an LGBTQ+ book where the queer characters weren’t sexualized the entire time. it really normalized same sex attraction which i really appreciated. this book touches on love, acceptance, and how familial trauma can be reformed. definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to read grisly descriptions and witness gay love
