Much like with [b:The Color of Magic|34497|The Color of Magic (Discworld, #1; Rincewind, #1)|Terry Pratchett|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1407111017s/34497.jpg|194190], I'm of two minds on this book. On one hand, it's a funny, enjoyable book. But on the other, it does not represent Discworld at its finest. So do I judge it as a book on its own? Or rather part two of a story? Or do I review it as a Discworld book first and foremost.

The truth, as it so often does, lies somewhere in the middle. It's impossible for me to detach this book from the books that came after. It's a well written book for sure, the humor is quite good and there's a few outrageous moments that will always stand out. But it's not quite as witty or sharp as later books in the series would become. Here the humor has a laser sharp focus on ridiculing fantasy as a whole whereas later books had more to say about the state of the world at large. And I miss that.

But it's a pretty quick read, I had it around the house, reading little small snippets when time permitted but in the past I've torn through the book in a day. There is a very strong sense of wanting to see what happens next and how [a:Terry Pratchett|1654|Terry Pratchett|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1235562205p2/1654.jpg] would twist the story around next. And, like I've already mentioned a few times, it's really funny. I wonder if Pratchett knew at the time just how important Rincewind would become to the literary world. And if it pleased him or displeased him.

Regardless, it's an important book for many reasons and if you're out for a zany, funny fantasy novel (part 2) then you can go a hell of a lot more wrong. Just, maybe, if you've read later entries in the Discworld, keep your expectations a bit lower.

A light-hearted story with some funny moments.

Still some early Discworld wonkyness however I had a much more enjoyable time with this than "The Colour of Magic"

This is the second in the series and follows on directly from the Colour of Magic and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. This book takes the series to the next level with improved story telling and the superb humour that Pratchett is now famous for. here we follow Rincewind and Twoflower as they recover themselves from their journey over the edge of the Disc and join forces with the Octavo, an extremely powerful spell book, in order to save the Disc from annihilation. This is a great story that is thoroughly engrossing and will have you laughing out loud (it certainly got me a-chuckling) that sets the Discworld series on its way building on the foundations set in the first book. Pratchett definitely hits his stride with this one.
