A book I had Chris read for homeschool, as I know it is a standard of middle school literature these days. Didn't do much for me, but I can certainly see how it might appear to middle schoolers. The ending felt very abrupt, but in a way, very realistic for all that - sometimes things just HAPPEN, and happen quickly,like that. Anyway. I give it 4/5.

I get that this story of survival is written for teenagers, who may find inspiration in the fortitude of the protagonist. But there wasn’t much here for me, a mature reader with an affinity for literary devices who definitely doesn’t want to read repeated passages about animal killing. I’ll say 2.5 ⭐️
