I don’t know how to rate this, so I’m leaving it blank for now.

This novella feels like House of Leaves but easier to understand and also sort of like an episode of Hannibal. I’m not sure what the “point” of this work was, but it’s intriguing to say the least. Eric LaRocca is an extremely effective writer and they use language in ways that bring the story to life. And in ways that really grossed me out at times. I typically don’t get squeamish easily when reading, but some of the body horror in this made me a little queasy and cringe. This novella is really strange and dark. I implore anyone to read the content warning before reading this. I listened to this on audio and, at times, I was reading the physical copy

I also don’t think I’ve ever said this before, but I think a lot of the material in this novella would work effectively as a short film. I doubt I’d watch it, but I think some folks may enjoy it.

I knew absolutely nothing going into this book and it’s probably for the best that everyone does especially due to the length of this book.

This is essentially the collections of journal entries, poems, transcripts, and even a novella written by a serial killer.

The story within this story, a novella called You’ve Lost A Lot of Blood, and we get to read part of that story in chunks. I really loved that it was a video game horror novella. It's something I don’t think we really see in the genre that often. I literally can only think of the film Stay Alive and Brainscan.

LaRocca’s new novel shares the same gripping gritty detail of his first Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke but is fundamentally better (more thought out and exciting). The format of the novel as if written as an investigative piece surrounding the disappearance of a murder and his accomplice is an interesting concept. The novella inside the book is extremely well written and at time had me wishing it was instead the main focus. Overall the book is pretty good. You can definitely see LaRocca’s progress as an author.
