Overall this was an okay read but for me, it was a little bit slow don't get me wrong there was nothing wrong with it I was just expecting it to be a little more fast paced. The characters were good and the storyline was well thought out. If your a paranormal fan ut is well worth a try
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
This book started out so good. I honestly thought from the first chapter I would be giving this book a 5 star rating. Dommiel stars off being a super rad dude. Then he and Anya met and immediately the rating started slipping.
Look, I'm not into insta-love, but I can handle it in romance novels. What made it worse was that Anya is supposed to be a badass angel, but she comes off as a naive, sweetheart. She believes in black and white, no grey- which is so frustrating. And apparently since she is an angel she can't fulfill any wants... including ever having sex. Yes, she is a virgin, which also I could have gotten behind, but put everything together and Anya is no longer a soldier. Even when she fights she doesn't get the chance to prove how awesome she can be. And there is this whole part where she tells Dommiel she isn't a submissive angel, yet I found no evidence to support that claim.
This is unfortunate because I found the world to be SUPER interesting. I'd love to read more about that world and the war going on. The story we got was okay, I thought it was a bit weak at times, since things didn't always add up or seemed to be solved easily. My dislike for the romance-- which led me to disliking the characters since romance is almost exclusively what the thought about-- is what tainted this book for me, otherwise I might have really enjoyed it.
I'm sure there are romance fans out there who would enjoy this, so I would recommend people at least try it out. Unfortunately, I won't be reading the next book in the series.

This just seemed a little on the slow side to me. It was an alright start to a new series overall but I really would hope the next books move at a faster pace. I'm still undecided if I will read book 2.
Thank you to Entangled and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC of this.
This is the second Juliette Cross novel I have read. The first one I enjoyed, but did not love, but when I read the synopsis for this one, I was taken with it instantly. I loved me some angel and demon YA romances, so got really excited to find an adult one.
I’ll be honest for the first 20%, I did not love it. In fact, I was actually quite bored. It was a slow build to anything actually going on, other than the two characters just meeting each other. I found myself skimming a few pages here and there. Somewhere between 20% and 30% is where it started to get really good! And from then on, I was hooked into the story. It took me so long to read only due to working all the time, but had I been at home relaxing, it would have been read really quickly because that is how into it I was. The drama, the fantasy elements, the sex, the characters, and the romance were ALL on point!
I loved Dommiel’s character. He’s fun, sexy, fierce, but more so…no perfect. He isn’t built to be a perfect looking demon. In fact, the author gives him a robotic arm and an eye patch to cover an old eye scar. He’s built to look broken and I guess, at first image, not the perfect sexy god that is usually built in these books. Now, for the rest of his looks though, he isn’t ugly. This is not a Beauty and the Beast retelling. But his image flaws help, I think, with the romance and suits the fact that his other half is an angel.
Anya is an interesting character. She’s fierce too, and super loyal, doing all this to save a fellow angel. I loved the scenes when her wings are described, because as I read I was often imagining her without wings for whatever reason, so the small reminders here and there helped a lot. To read about her using them was fun.
There were two sides of the romance: the sexy and the romantic. The author blended both of them beautifully! The scenes of Dommiel and Anya together were super hot all through the novel. But when they started to fall for each other, the novel and its romance, turned super sweet. Given the character built up for Dommiel especially, being in his head was wonderful when it came to thinking about and protecting Anya. My stomach was in knots for much of it because of how swoony it really was. I loved reading about these two falling in love and I loved Dommiel’s reaction to Anya and falling in love in general.
I give this 4 stars because the beginning started out quite boring, and I found the ending was a tad rushed for my taste. I would have liked it stretched out a little bit more because Anya’s issue was solved with no trouble at all really, when it came down to it.
Overall, though I did enjoy this book a lot and I will be keeping my eye out for book 2!

I devoured all three books on this series in less than a week. I could not put them down. Love and pain and redemption and over the top villains - this book has it all.
Darkest Heart is book one in the Dominion series by Juliette Cross.
This book takes part in the same world as the, Vessel Trilogy series. It’s a spin-off. Even if you haven’t read the other series, you are ok to pick this one up. It stands on it’s own! As for me I will tell you I couldn’t get threw book one, in the authors Vessel Trilogy, so I’m comfortable saying you don’t have to read one to read the other.
In Darkest Heart we quickly learn that the apocalypse has happened on earth. Angels and Demons are battling it out on earth and that the humans are in short supply, going extinct.
Our story focuses on Anya, an angelic warrior and Dommiel, a demon prince outcast. It’s opposing forces, light and dark, coming together to find love and redemption.
I have to say the author did a superb job in describing Dommiel. Oh my is he one HOT demon. Their is so much more to this demon then what everyone sees. He’s got layers that he doesn’t let the world see and I loved this about him. He’s not good, yet he’s not all bad. He had that perfect blend of both to make him enticing and help him find love and redemption. Anya our warrior angel has a heart. She used to help children before the war, but now she is a fighter. I won’t say I fell for her, but I didn’t dislike her. She just didn’t pop like Dommiel.
The secondary characters where nice to meet and I hope we get to see more of the Angel's that where introduced and one or two of those Demon's Dommiel is friends with.
This story puts opposites, light and dark, together in one common goal and on the way they both find that balance between the two and eternal love.
Darkest Heart was a satisfying read. At times it was slow, but things do pick up and we get some great action scenes and sexy times too. I’m curious to see what comes next in the Dominion series.
Rated: 3.5 Stars

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An addictive and intriguing first book =D
As I started a Juliette Cross marathon, I decided to read this series which has been in my TBR list for a while =D
I quickly realized that it was a spin-off from another series and that I spoiled myself BUT I could not resist an angel / demon romance ><
And I was not disappointed !! Even if I am not a fan of the post-apocalyptic world (it's personal even if here it was rather well written), I loved the intrigue (find a lost archangel), the different characters (demons like Bone and humans like Cooper both =D) and the romance between Anya and Dommiel (I WANT a demon who looks like a pirate and who flirts by using Shakespeare <3)
In short, a well-written post-apocalyptic romance that keeps you on tenterhooks from start to finish ><
I will admit when I started reading Darkest Heart I struggled with it, it felt very cheesy and cliche especially the dialogue but as I continued to read I began to enjoy it and became invested in the characters.
Darkest Heart was action packed, a bit brutal and a whole lot of forbidden. I enjoyed and I'm looking forward to reading more stories set in this intriguing world.
Cheese and crackers... Juliette you slay me. Just - ugh loved it comrades! This was a five stars hands down it was glorious. Juliette just take all the fucking stars. Gory hell it was an absolute phenomenal read.
I will admit here and now, I am in a huge binder read mode with Cross books. I have several of her series on my eReader that are on my TBR and I was blown away with her Vampire Blood Series that I have read at this point and I gotta say she is an amazing author. Her main characters always have this all-consuming, intensely passionate romance that just makes you gush. On top of that she rocks are world building.
So with that said ...before I dive into the more important thing - the obvious romance porn, I mean that is why we are all here right? But what I will be completely honest about is that Juliette has this way with building this fictional world that these main characters revolve in that just blows your mind. I know, the characters should, and ARE the main attribute to all reasons why I love her writing style but I cannot and will not move on without mentioning the killer world building and lore of Darkest Heart.
Anyone a gamer? Play Blizzard's Diablo? Whether you do or not doesn't really make a difference just really something I personally noticed and really enjoyed overall based around the backstory of the world, more or less just a connection of what I really felt slayed me. So in the game it is about fallen angels, the corruption of angels, Diablo himself destroying the world all the while battling and controlling humans. In short, there is an entire lore around angels and demons living in the world with mortals. So skip ahead to Darkest Heart, my spidey senses are tingling because I get nothing but Diablo lore feels with this dramatically intense romance twist that made my heart pound, my mind crazy and my loins dripping.
THAT is what makes this fucking brilliant. There is logically based demonology backbone but without forcing any type of spiritual bias onto the reader. Putting it simply, it is a world where angels and demons co-exist in our mortal world, and it isn't a pretty picture. The world is in ruin, the gates between hell and heaven are blurred, earth is desolate - humans are dying, demons are havoc, basic primal mayhem for conquering everything. It is a wasteland amongst a growing battlefield. And I say the line is blurred too (physically and dichotomy) because in the process of demons sucking our world dry, angels are no better; both sides fighting for control yet not caring what damage they are doing.
Alright - boom. I know that was a cluster fuck of amazing, but I couldn't move on with appreciating the research, the storyline, the overall lore that Juliette created for this romance because it was masterful. I honestly think that anyone who goes into this book thinking it is going to be this erotic, paranormal romance that just beaver drools you off the chair, you won't be wrong, it does that but it is not JUST the romance. When an author does paranormal fantasy world building and kicks ass at it, you have to take a moment to say you fucking nailed it.
Now what we all come here for - the romance... hold on to your tits babes.
Firstly I really enjoyed Anya. She was such a fierce, passionate type female, she was righteous yet grounded enough to understand herself and more importantly her needs. She is selfish yet selfless if that makes any sense. And more importantly, Anya as a guardian angel was just stunning. She wasn't weak. Not saying she didn't devolve into a lustful lush for our sexy as hell demon, Dommiel, but she was nonetheless a warrior. She kicked ass and took names all the while saving orphaned children. And as for the delicious demon...
Dommiel. Holy balls and yum comrades. Dommiel is the perfect fictional male character. I have a massive book boner for male characters with a hilarious sarcastic, flirty asshole complex, add in that he is a demon - you bet your bottom dollar I was head over heels in love with him. The crudeness, blatant sex appeal that radiates off him was entertaining enough. He too is also semi split in his personality as well. He is seen as a traitor among his own demon fellows but not entirely accepted by the other side, one in which he is now working for - the proclaimed good guys. He is compassionate towards the greater good while he also admits his own faults, the reason behind him falling.
Because of these clashes, Dommiel and Anya start an even more fierce connection that basically heightens the factor of blurred lines between demon and angels. Anya needs Dommiel's help to find the Archangel Uriel (both for self-righteous and selfish reasons) yet along the short time of adventure finds herself battling this gnawing need to be connected to Dommiel. And Dommiel on the other front, well shit a demon falling for an angel, she is the light in his darkness. Obviously you can kind of get these insta-lust, perhaps insta-love vibes I might be dropping down, I mean really they meet and fall fast I won't deny it but it flows smashingly. From the moment of meeting they have this intense just fierce chemistry that is just undeniable. It lights up the pages. Honestly when I wasn't chuckling at their conversations, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the duet to connect physically. Swoon worthy.
Absolute perfection.
I mean, what else can I say to peer pressure this book, hell this author onto more readers? Honestly this is one long review! But I couldn't stop. It was just amazing. Everything blew me away. The characters, the romance, the world lore - Juliette slays me. I cannot recommend this author enough. If you enjoy this genre I highly encourage giving her a dive, she is worth the chance.
So what is next in our Dominion series? I cannot wait to find out!
I have so much love for this story and its hero and heroine I can't even describe it right now...
Full Review: Diese Geschichte hat absolut alles, was sie braucht: fantastische, durch ihre Ambivalenz sehr interessante und nachvollziehbare Charaktere, ein dunkel-schillerndes Worldbuilding und einen spannenden Plot.
Einen Dämon als Protagonisten zu wählen, ist natürlich mutig, da ich hier einen ambivalenten Charakter erwarte, der sowohl seine dämonischen als auch seine sympathischen Züge durchscheinen lässt. Mit Dommiel gelingt der Autorin ein solcher Protagonist, der mit deinem Sarkasmus, seinem schwarzen Humor und seiner dunkel-verführerischen Art das Herz des Lesers wortwörtlich im Sturm erobert. Die „Tonart“ seines POV hat mich sofort in die Geschichte hineingezogen: Dommiel trägt die Geschichte sichtbar, auch wenn sein weiblicher Gegenpart Anya ebenfalls schnell meine Sympathie hatte.
Für diejenigen, die Juliette Cross‘ Vessel-Trilogie (die man nicht gelesen haben muss, um Darkest Heart zu verstehen – es schadet aber auch nicht, weil dadurch das Worldbuilding sehr viel tiefgründiger erscheint) bereits kennen, ist er kein Unbekannter und doch offenbart er erst hier die ganze Tiefe seines Charakters. Man merkt deutlich, dass die Autorin seit dem Debüt mit ihrer Vessel-Trilogie einiges dazu gelernt hat. Diese Geschichte ist atmosphärisch und dunkel, der Plot ist aus genau der richtigen Mischung von romantischen und spannenden Elementen gestrickt, da die beiden sich während der Suche nach dem verschollenen Erzengel Uriel sehr schnell zueinander hingezogen fühlen. Dabei weist der Roman einen klaren Fall von insta-lust auf, von dem man sich aber nicht abschrecken lassen sollte, da die Autorin es meisterhaft schafft, Dommiel eine fühlbare und authentische Wandlung durchmachen zu lassen, die mit einem atemberaubenden Showdown die Geschichte zum Höhepunkt führt.
Von vorne bis hinten fesselnd gestaltet und erzählt. Ich kann es kaum erwarten, die nächsten Titel der Dominion-Reihe zu lesen.
