It was a good story, and I especially loved the references to Culloden and what happened to the people afterwards. But, especially towards the end, it seemed rushed, glossed over, summarized, lacking in detail.

This was a beautiful read, enjoyed it and the characters. Didn’t understand why the heroine fell for the other hero though, it seemed more like nostalgia made her love him.

*4.5* Recommended for fans of steamier historicals with a ton of heart.

This book cover is awful and makes it seem like this is a salacious, sex-filled, threesome romp. It does have a ménage, but it’s also SO MUCH more than that.

This is a historical romance between an older man and a younger woman. They are complete opposites, one an English Earl, the other the daughter of a Scottish Laird killed during the Battle of Culloden. It's a love match, despite the age and social gap.

Edgar has some health issues, and he makes it clear to Emily, this could be an issue for their intimate lives. This part of the story was told so carefully, so genuine and tender. Emily cares deeply for her new husband, she finds a way to make it work, and loves him through all his insecurities.

Despite how short this book is, the story is rich with details and personality. Granted, the “bad guys” are ott, and it seems obvious to everyone but the MC what is happening. There are a few other irritants, but they didn’t diminish my enjoyment of the overall story.

I'd be remiss not to mention Angus. A mouthy indentured Highland man working as groom for Edgar. An unpolished, angry man, who is a key character in this love story.

The threesome on the cover doesn’t take place until well into the last quarter of the story. It’s written in such a way that feels completely real and not written as smut. While I wouldn’t label this story as erotica, it does have some very erotic moments.

I loved this book for the storytelling, the complete heart, and the genuine emotion I felt from the characters as I read.

*Side note. It’s a hard book to find. First released in 2007, I was able to find a used paperback.

definitely gonna read more books from Kate Poole

This book was a beautiful emotional rollercoaster, I loved edgars selflessness,
the love he had for his wife, I kept it dry troughout the whole book,(proud of myself)
until I got to the part where edgar wrote the letters.. even though his relationship with
angus isn't really described in the book, the 'bed scene' where edgar was freezing was beautiful
and kind of showed the love the grew to have for each other and his last words to him, Yours edgar.

Can they republish this with a cover that fits, hmmm... well then people might not be as inclined to read it. The cover is really misleading.

This is a romance, sweet, emotional, passionate. Yes there are erotic sex scenes but they are few and far between, the first one being quite deep into the story, maybe 40 or 50% in. Emily is sweet, Egar is caring. He is trying to protect the woman that has given him back joy, that he's fallen in love with. It is sweet and loving. Angus is passionate, untrusting, judgmental, it takes a lot for him to get over these. One can understand since he went from being a Laird in Scotland to an indentured servant taking care of English horses. It takes all three of them a lot of adjustments to do what will be the best in the end. They have to allow her, accept her, loving another man, and she needs to accepting that she can love two men, in very different ways. It was emotional. My only complaint is I thought the nephew and his wife got in the way of the story at the end.

I had a bit of trouble rating this book.
It's very far-fetched and I expect much more realism and accuracy from my historical romances.
Having said that, for what it is (a ridiculous but ultimately entertaining romp with protagonists rubbing various body parts together + a Jamie Fraser type horse whisperer) it serves it's purpose.
If you're in the mood for something very light and moderately naughty, this will do it.

This didn't work for me, unfortunately. I was bored by the story quickly and I never made a connection with Emily, Edgar or Angus. I really didn't care what happened with them.

Set in the 1750s. An earl discovers his nephew/heir sexually harassing the governess, and jumps in to rescue and eventually marry her. This is the romance part. When it turns out that the earl's degenerative disease is probably hereditary, they resort to finding another father for their children--no one wants the nephew to inherit because he's an asshole. The man they both end up having in mind turns out to be connected to the heroine in an unexpected way. This is the menage a trois romance part. I'm still not sure what to make of this book. The dialect was pretty poorly written, and, references to the '45 Jacobite rebellion aside, the sense of historical setting was pretty thin. The emotional plot about coming to terms with loving >1 man / 2 men sharing the woman they love was fairly well-done and the sex scenes were hot. I guess for the value I got I feel I paid about $5 too much for it
