This book is one of those rare finds: the literary horror novel. Beautiful sentences, a unique style and voice, a main character who both delights and infuriates--and a story which pulls no punches. I predict this will be nominated for and win a number of prizes in its genre. A real fucking delight.
actual rating 4.5
this was a very intriguing novel and not at all what I expected it to be like. Instead of action pack zombie gore I got a soul deep view of the human condition. Its a tale of survival, life, regret, and guilt. And let me tell you that Alden Bell certainly has a way with words as he has managed to weave a very intricate novel that goes deeper than the average zombie apocalypse.

Utterly gorgeous language--not for the squeamish, though (but then, zombie books don't tend to be, do they?)
Unable to rate. That ending ....

The Reapers Are The Angels follows Temple (alias Sarah Mary Williams), a late teen/ young adult on her journey of survival, self discovery, and redemption. Her story is hopeful and heartbreaking, inspiring introspection. In this post apocalyptic world, you’ll discover: zombies, zombie-human mutants, found family (and found and found and found….), train rides, a little bit of brief spice, and a whole lot of beautiful imagery amongst devastation and ruin.
Favorite quotes:
“In the history of the planet, there ain’t never been a kid like you before. A kid who’s seen the things you seen. A kid who fought the same fight you fought. You’re a new thing altogether. A brand new thing.”
“Sometimes you gotta bust apart to get yourself put back together.”
“Ain’t no hell deep enough to keep heaven out.”
“Her thoughts go to sorry places. She thibks of God and of the angels who will decide whether or not she enters heaven.”
“She hold it (a memory) in her palm like a captured ladybug and thinks, Well ain’t I been some places, ain’t I partook in some glorious happenings wanderin my way between heaven and earth. And if I ain’t seen everything there is to see, it wasn’t for lack of lookin.”
“And she turns her back on the lost and the dead and the trampled down, she leaves them to their airy graves, and she and the big man next to her look upward at heaven and find there not just gates and angels but other wonders too, like airplanes that go faster than sound and statues taller than any man and waterfalls taller than any statue and buildings taller than any waterfall and stories taller still that reach up and hook you by the britches on the cusp of the moon where you can look and see the earth whole and you can see how silly and precious a little marble it really is after all.”

I really loved this book. Temple is easy to love and have compassion for. I enjoyed the writing style. The Ending hurt a little
This is a beautifully written book. I just devoured it. Temple is an amazing character that I loved getting to know. I had so much hope for her in this tragic Zombie filled world.
Temple was born into the Zombie infested world so it was the only way of life she knew, she didn't think it was that bad. She had learned to survive and had grown up a lot faster than she should have.
This is an Amazing Zombie novel. While I was reading it, I kept thinking why is this book so short. I just thought that Temple had so many stories that could be told. I didn't want it to end.
The ending is hard to except.

I think I had so much hope for Temple and that she was such a survivor that she would make it. But the more I think about it I come to the understanding that it is the classic Zombie ending. No one really Survives.
