This was such a haunting book. The writer wrote such a gruesome world but in a way where it wasn't hard to believe that it was real. Temple, for being only 15, moves through this zombie infested world with ease adm familiarity - which shouldn't be surprising considering its all she's known. The people that she meets and the stories that exisit just add to this tale leading up to the end. Although for me it wasn't completely unexpected, I was still shocked at the end.
I loved Temple. In general, I'm pretty much spent on Zombie stories for a while, but people kept singing high praises for this book. Well, they were right. It's a damned good story, not necessarily for the zombies but for the main character.

Wow. I just finished reading the book a minute ago.To begin with, this is not what I expected nor was it what I was looking for but it turned out to be something I would've regretted not reading. I read this book thinking of only zombies in my mind. I decided I wanted some zombie action and came across this book and thought I'd give it a shot and I'm glad I did. Forgive me if this review seems to be all over the place. I needed to get this out as soon as I read the book, because, the book gets to you.
Okay, so this book mostly revolves around a 15 year old girl named 'Temple'. She's a strong girl, surviving in a world loaded with zombies whom she refers to as "Meatskins". But it isn't about the zombies. It's about her journey, as she moves from place to place, the people she meets. It is about death, redemption, your beliefs. While on her journey, she comes across this place where an incident occurs and she makes an enemy who vows to kill her. But the man,Moses, and Temple are connected somehow, deep within, it feels like they're the only ones who understands this world. He grows fond of her which he reveals, in the end although it is quite obvious.
The writing, oh, the writing is lovely. It has these amazing prose and stuff in it,sometimes, you have to put the book down and think about it. In the end, all you can say is, the book gets to you. It is thought-provoking and those are books that have a special place.
Some of my fav lines:
“Some people, he says, they hide themselves away from the eyes of the world. They hunker down and shiver. They find four walls high enough to put between them and everything else. Those people, to them the world is a frightful place. See, you and me, we're different. When we are called on to move, we move. It don't matter the cause or the distance. Revenge or ministration, reason or folly - it's all the same to us.”
"Sometimes when there’s no light to see by, that’s when everything comes sharp and clear."
“Beyond the pursuit of meaning and beyond good and evil too, she says. See, it’s a daily chore tryin to do the right thing. Not because the right thing is hard to do—it ain’t. It’s just cause the right thing—well, the right thing’s got a way of eluding you. You give me a compass that tells good from bad, and boy I’ll be a soldier of the righteous truth. But them two things are a slippery business, and tellin them apart might as well be a blind man’s guess.”

I really enjoyed this, though felt it was too short. I wanted to learn more about Temple's background rather than simply seeing the results of previous experiences.
The book does a good job of being more realistic as far as these stories go. Bad stuff happens and Temple behaves as an adult despite being 15. Gotta step up if you're gonna survive zombies.
The story is largely Temple being chased, which made me think of The Knife of Never Letting Go. I think the implementation is better done here though.
This is probably more of a 4.5/5 book, but I felt like we didn't get enough of Temple's story. We saw the girl as a consequence of things that had already happened, but we didn't get much of a view of those things. So she's more the stoic wanderer dealing with the world than the young woman who has developed because of it.

Super poetic writing, made you actually think about life and death. Story drew me in really quickly, it wasnt just another apocalyptic book but had actual meaning behind it all besides death and the end of the world
