This was pretty good! I love Temple. Her voice is real, true, and simple. I very much enjoyed this "zombie" story, although it is a zombie story, much like The Walking Dead: It isn't about the zombies, but about life.
Seeing as I got this copy brand new for a pound, I wasn't expecting much. But this novel was haunting, disconcerting and strangely evocative. The writing style put me in mind of a post-apocalyptic Of Mice& Men with a similar bittersweet ending. I am definitely picking up the next book, it's worth it.
I was really looking forward to reading this, it looked awesome and maybe I would have liked it better if not for one of the scenes in the beginning of the book: "They stumble out of the utility closet, three of them (..)They must have fed recently, so they will be strong. And they are between her and the stairs."
How did they get in there? And if they were put in there, who puts three zombies in a utility closet, that are apparently at their strongest?
And did they have a snack with them in there, since they've all recently fed or to be fair they could've snacked of each other. AS they are later on revealed to do when in a tight spot (pun intended).
Three zombies don't randomly wander into a closet and lock the door after them, they don't hang out there till someone happens to come into the room and they certainly don't lay in wait in an old meth lab, in a basement, in a utility closet!
I know for many this would be a detail, but it annoyed me so much I kept thinking about it throughout the book, it wouldn't have annoyed me if the main character had thought about it, but it was apparently a natural occurrence.
To me it seemed like a bad scene from a video game.
Other than that, I thought it was a good take on how society could be, some in secure groups and some as drifters. And I liked Moses and mostly I did actually like Temple.
But another thing annoyed me and that was the lack of "" around the dialogue. I kept getting reminded I was reading a book, since I had to go back a lot and see if it was something she had said out loud or just thought, because it could be either or. I first gave it one star, but I'm going to up it to two, since writing this review has reminded me of its better points. I also liked the mutants and the fish...
Edit: You know what I take it back; one star it is. After reading some other reviews, I realize how unresearched it actually is (gasoline etc) and the editing is nonexistent. I just didn't realize the other things because i was obsessing over the plot hole... This book has made me angry! It could have been fantastic, if the work had been done properly! GAH!

The story of a girl, Temple, and her survival across post-apocalyptic America. Along the way she meets Maury who needs help. A story of Temple's path, her ambitions, her animalistic way to survive and her deep, dark secrets keeping her going. Meatsacks and other dangers cross her path which she has learnt to deal with or adapts too quickly. It's like the frontier meets The Walking Dead. A story of hope, determination, personal battles, morales, fate and human nature at it's best and worst.
WOWZERS!! This was really amazing, I don't know, apparently I do not give Zombie books enough credit because this was not what I was expecting. The language was fantastic, Temple as the flawed hero who would never in a million years ever get how brave she is,just a stunning character and I could not put this down because I needed to know what happened to her next, read it in one day, quick read so so so good. Perfect for Halloween or anytime ever.

This was wild. This was another zombie book so you know I'm on board!
As usual this book required suspension of disbelief, but that's par for the course with zombie fiction. This one wasn't keen on world building. Who cares why there are zombies? Who needs to know about the infrastructure of the world? Not me, we have adventures to get to!
Join an MC who has grown up in a zombie filled world. She's basically Clementine from the Walking Dead video game, except maybe crabbier. She's like Clem, but a sociopath.
This was a road trip book, so if you don't like those this won't be your thing. The beginning didn't impress me but as we got more bonkers I grew more invented. Plus we had a frenemies dynamic with a guy who is hunting her.
I do plan to do a full review on my channel so keep an eye out for that!

This book was amazing and so incredibly well written. I could really see the settings in my mind, which is something I seem to have a problem with in a lot of dystopian or post apocalyptic fiction I've been reading. Everything jumps off the page here. Really well done and absolutely devasting.
