I first read this book (and series) when I was a kid in the early 2000s. After a read as an adult, I'm sure this book (and its counterparts) had a great impact on my vocabulary! So many definitions were inserted into the book in a unique and fun way that didn't detract from the story.

The narrator, despite the sad story, felt kind. I'm a firm believer that children's books should talk about difficult topics, and A Series of Unfortunate Events does that well without leaving the reader feeling hopeless and defeated. That takes talent.

 A great start to one of my favorite series of all time!

This very short book introduces you to the Baudelaire children, their tragic life, the useless and absurd adults around them and Snicket's witty and funny writing.

I love it.

Lemony is a great narrator and I am in love with his ASOUE world.

The adult/minor relationship (villain adult man with 14-year-old girl) isn’t real, it’s a

fake marriage

but they do discuss it quite in depth (nothing sexual/romantic, but she imagines having to sleep in the same bed). Many evil adults are creepy towards the children calling them “pretty” and “beautiful” but it’s not supposed to be genuinely paedophilic. Alcoholism is that they call Count Olaf “a drunk” and say he drinks too much wine.
