love you mother Schunesson. I had the privilege to meet her and ask her questions so I think i got a very very good understanding of the book and why it was written and what it was critiquing, etc etc. giving it such a high rating because i was so entertained the WHOLE time. Bibs frustrated me constantly and yet I loved her. I miss her in some way too now?? Idk why. She’s also just so funny without meaning to be. And so real. And so swedish 😂 i asked Tone how good of a representation on the swedish population she thought the characters were and she went on a whole ramble on swedish people and their idiosyncrasies which was so fascinating. It’s a lil reminiscent of other books w unlikeable female characters like si Otessa Moshfeg’s Year of Rest and Relaxation, or The Bell Jar, but I enjoyed this one far better than the other two.

Anyways, i love me a good character study. Esp on a character whose at a completely different stage of life yet somehow i am able to relate to. 100% would read again. [read for book club]

Honestly didn't know what to think about this going into it but what a brilliant little book. Days & Days & Days is a character study following an aging reality TV star called Bibbs who is watching her life to begin to crumble around her - it is funny, witty, sad, and uncomfortable. The lengths that Bibbs goes to in order to stop the life she loves changing is just at times unhinged but it really exposes and criticizes modern celebrity cancel culture, social media addiction and the danger of idolization. Not much happens in the way of plot but the voice of Bibbs was so strong and entertaining that I just flew through the book. I found the aspects of the book exploring heartbreak particularly moving - Bibbs is a character who seems really artificial and surface level but there are moments in the book where through the cracks in her façade we get to see true sadness and heartbreak from losing the love of her life, and it's such a roller-coaster watching her turn to self-destructive acts and words rather than giving herself the self-love she needs.

Really enjoyed my time with this book. I'm not sure it will be for everyone - Bibbs has quite an acquired voice and the book can be very crude at times but this is just what I loved about it. It has echoes of cult fiction from the 20th century à la Bret Easton Ellis, Jay McInerney and Eve Babitz. I definitely recommend this one to people a fan of the above mentioned authors but also if you are looking for a funny and entertaining but touching character study which doesn't shy away from exploring how low someone can go to deal with their own emotions. And it's translated from Swedish!
