I don't think there's a series out there that gives you more manga bang for your buck than Spy x Family. So often in a series, the individual chapters blur together as tiny pieces in the overall whole, but with Endo's work I feel like I've finished a whole episode of TV every time a chapter comes to a close. The clean, detailed art style; the abundance of material on each page; the way each character is constantly thrown for a loop. No wonder this shit is kicking off in sales because the final effect is so incredibly satisfying, and makes each Volume feel about twice as long as it really is - and I mean that in the best possible way.
As for this release itself: Volume 2 goes pretty heavy on the Anya storyline as she enters Eden academy and begins to enrage the son of Twilight's prime target. I like that we're prodding deep into Anya's current experiences before getting anywhere near her backstory; that is, if Endo decides to go there at all, which I honestly would be okay either way on. In contrast to the first Volume's subterfuge comedy, this issue is a more classic coming-of-age kids affair with added telepathy. It's good stuff, though it begs an interesting point: for a series with such a 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' style premise...there really isn't a whole lot of tension with regards to keeping their identities safe from each other.
Now, I'm not raising this as a problem - the story is going very nicely, and events in the last few pages suggest a return to the first Volume's level of stakes. I'm more just raising it as a "huh, that's interesting" point. The family are all on the same page when it comes to keeping their sham arrangement a secret from the outside world, which is where a lot of the lovable interactions come from. But so far, it's not really going near the danger that everyone's secret identities present to each other. Again - I really like what the series is doing. I just wonder if it is ever going to go there, because it seems like there's some juicy material to excavate there. (No-one reads these reviews because I just throw them into the Goodreads void, but if anyone does happen to read this and knows about any developments on the topic - please don't tell me).
Anyhoo, off to Volume 3...soon. I've got some other stuff I want to make a dent in, or I'll be circling the manga drain in perpetuity. Also, I'm sort of kidding myself that the Volume 3 paperback might come back in stock somewhere soon, and that if I wait I won't have to buy the Kindle version. Yeah this is a bit silly, because the Kindle versions are cheap and pretty good. And yeah, there's almost no way it comes back in stock in the next week because apparently Viz is really low on paper. But hey, I like physical media, and I like to line up all those books in a row and watch the numbers go up one at a time. I've accepted for now that the collection is gonna have some gaps, though.
Have I got any personal hopes for Volume 3? Well, I would like to see Endo press the Yor storyline a bit harder. We've had Twilight's trials and tribulations, and Anya has been put through the ringer at school, but so far we don't really know a huge amount about Yor's assassination job - what she she feels about it, or what problems it can cause her now that she's in a fake marriage. I like Yor, and I thought her chapter with Twilight in Volume 1 was maybe the best part of that release, so it would be nice to see her get some more focus. Other than that, I'm mostly curious to see how the series handles Yuri, and the revelation that. Spy x Family has already shown it isn't afraid to have a little bite to contrast with its more wholesome moments, but this seems like particularly sinister territory. I'll be interested to see how Endo approaches it, and what this means for the family's problems going forward.

Cannot wait for the awkward dynamic to increase with the yor’s brother and his hidden identity😂
Anya is adorable and so funny. Best written child character I've seen in a long time. Like the introduction of Yor's brother, too. Excited for the next one!
