I love the series but this one, number six, didn't bowl me over quite as much as the others have. Briefly, Sherlock Holmes is a made-up name for Charlotte Holmes who knows all too well the limitations on Victorian women Hiding her clever talents as those of a man allows her a freedom she wouldn't have otherwise.

This story was particularly convoluted by the end though it started out simply: the evil and terrifying Moriarty hires Holmes (whom he knows is Charlotte) to ensure his daughter is safe where she hides out with fellow mystics in a compound overlooking the cliffs of Cornwall. Charlotte, her companion Mrs John Watson, and her best friend / lover Lord Ingram leave London behind as they knowingly move into Moriarty's trap. Cloak and dagger activities ensue.

Cornwall is depicted as both beautiful and harsh, clothing is lovingly described in great detail, and food, as the be-all and end-all of Charlotte's existence, is given the hagiographic treatment. It's a fun, fast-paced adventure with lovable, funny characters, and I look forward to the next entry in the series, even though I'll have to wait a year or more.
