Carolyn has lived in a strange multi-dimensional library surrounded by psychopaths since she was eight. Ancient enemies of her Father are on the move. But don’t worry, she has a plan.
Strange book, with lots going on. I had to just keep going during some times when I didn’t really understand what was happening, but it does become clear by the end. There are a lot of apocalyptic themes, which made it probably not the best choice while we are practicing social distancing during a global pandemic. But it’s a great read. Four and a half stars rounded up to five.
p.s. there is a fair amount of violence and gore in this book, but it is so over-the-top that it has an almost cartoonish aspect, so it didn’t bug me as much as it otherwise might have.

A common review I've seen about this book is that you can't really describe it in a good enough way, you just have to read it. Now that I have finished the book, I understand this statement entirely. I would HIGHLY recommend reviewing content warnings if you have any strong stances on topics you do not wish to read about.
Graphic: Suicide, Violence, Gore, Animal cruelty, Blood, Murder, Animal death, Injury/Injury detail, Death of parent, Body horror, Child death, Fire/Fire injury, Child abuse, and Suicide attempt
Moderate: Rape, Sexual content, Alcohol, Sexual violence, Drug use, Grief, Sexual assault, Gaslighting, and Medical content
Minor: Abandonment and Car accident

Loved the book until the last 50 pages or so. Really fucked up the ending, though I love that Steve was turned into the new sun and all the lion shenanigans. There was no reason to resurrect father and try to make him sympathetic. It would have been so much more interesting to see Carolyn work trough her grief and anger on her own instead of having an abusive father figure tell her that all the horror she lived through was not only justified but necessary and make her agree to that without any pushback. Also actually who the fuck cares about Erwin. Is this an US-american thing to have war criminals be teachers at schools teach the opposite of deescalation and be proud of it. Just what. Little disappointing but the first 90% of the book were quite good, I just wasn’t a fan of the conclusion (and - you know it - Erwin).
If you want to read a really good book with the main theme of „god is not only just a dude but an abusive asshole and has to die“ go read the locked tomb by tamsyn muir (especially Nona the ninth) it’s so much more fun and you don’t have to put up with this super annoying war criminal the author clearly thought was a really cool character 🙄
