This may well be the best old-fashioned mystery I have ever read.

Though I didn't care much for the meta reasons for the story
-- why Aiden was there, what the Plague Doctor was trying to accomplish --
I even loved that there was a reason behind all the madness and that it made sense. It was such a snapshot on how people can change and become different.

As for the actual mystery, as soon as I figured one thing out, another surprised me. Though I didn't agree with all the choices of the characters, they were a consistent welcome within a constant flux of other characters.

If you loved Knives Out or the Poirot books, this book is for you.

Trying to wrap my head around the fact that this was a debut novel

I have never read a book that made me audibly gasp as much as this one. The twists are INCREDIBLE, and I felt like my mind was being blown again and again literally every 3 pages, especially once it hits half way. Every time I thought I knew what was happening, Turton said NOPE, yet it all made sense in the end. My only problem with it was that my brain sometimes felt too small to comprehend all the hundreds of moving parts and tiny details that were important to remember throughout the whole book -- even though the whole book technically happens over 1 day. Still, the constant crazy twists, the compelling mystery and world-building, and the amazing writing deserves 4.5 stars. Not to mention it's my favorite combination of science fiction/fantasy/still slightly realistic/impressive characterization. Wish I could read it all over again.

i gotta say, the immense fatphobia and ableist language pretty much soured this entire book for me.

i found the parts past the halfway mark the most interesting, basically most of the parts where things are being revealed and bishop collected concrete information. but overall this was super tedious to me, even with the reveal/explanation of the bigger picture.

I thought the premise of this novel was really unique, and it kept me guessing until the very end!
