An oldie but goodie, I'm glad I revisited this book. As a former Academic Decathlon participant and outspoken/precocious sixth grader, there is nothing about this book that I don't love.
The View From Saturday is basically what would happen if The Breakfast Club was made out of middle schoolers who are interesting and kind rather than cardboard cutouts of what a middle-aged man thinks the teens are like these days.
The narrative is loosely structured around a sixth grade quiz bowl team's journey to the state championships; more truly though it's really about the often unlikely ways in which people come and go from our lives, and how we cope with it. It's also full of wonderful trivia, and it taught me the difference between "hanged" and "hung" in a very lasting way.
Even as a fifth grader (which is when I first read this book) I loved it. Today, from the outside, I love it more. Share it with your elementary and middle schoolers. It's a gift.

This book was pretty decent overall. I think kids would really enjoy it, as much as I did!

I really enjoyed this (not as much as From the Mixed Up Files, but that book is super special). There were a few things I was confused about-why the rope? Seriously no idea about that. But I liked the 4 main characters and the quiz competition elements of the book.
I enjoyed this middle-grade audio book about 4 very different kids who come together as Academic Bowl champions and friends. Read my full review at:

I listened to this one with the kids and I thought it was cute. I waffled between 3 & 4 stars, but the kids did enjoy it. The author is already known for "From the Mixed of Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" written 30 years earlier so I had high expectations and it was written well. If anything, the only thing I didn't enjoy is some of the modern aspects of the story line/language, but otherwise it was fun to listen to.
