Sometimes a bit hard to read, but a wonderful, thought-provoking view on individuality, freedom and social authority.

We live in a society.

This is obviously a dated piece, but incredibly poignant in its critique of caplitalism 100 years ago in ways that still ring true today.

Huxley's dystopian world indicates that it is our pleasures that will kill us. Indulging in pleasure and attaining a constant stream of "happiness" degenerates men and women into an infant-like state; docile, unimaginative and unchallenged. I enjoyed John's passion in retaining his individuality - his desire to sin, develop skill, to be good. I think we live in a culture that often glosses over the development of skill in individuals and the patience, commitment and struggle it takes to achieve goals, and instead search for the most easy and convenient ways to satiate needs and desires,

Problematic elements to the book however, were:
-the treatment of people of colour (very, very concerning)
-lack of sexuality (no homosexual or even homoerotic acts mentioned in the book at all. It's invisibility seems to indicate it doesn't exist at all)
-treatment of women (Lenina as an object of desire for most of the male characters in the novel. Also the power positions in the novel seemed to belong solely to men).
