This book made me cry on the train and in a random cafe.

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Mass is the first book in the Crescent City series taking place in a more technologically advanced city (as compared to the author’s other series) where fae, werewolves, angels, and others live together. The story primarily follows Bryce, a half-fae assistant art curator, and Hunt, an angel enslaved for a prior attempt to overthrow the government, as they get thrown together to uncover various plots involving demons that are endangering the people of Crescent City.

I will say, it took me a second to get into this book and to even pick it up considering how chonky it is; however, once I got past part 1, I was engrossed. The characters and the relationships between them were all well-developed, and I really liked the mystery aspect of the plot, which I feel like there is less of in her other series. In typical Sarah J. Maas fashion, everything happens all at once during the last 20% of the book, and things felt like a whirlwind from then on, which I didn’t mind. I’m glad this wasn’t the first book I’ve read by this author because I don’t think I would’ve enjoyed it as much if it was, but I’m glad I read it, and I’m looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

More of a DNF for now. Just not feeling in the mood for this type of fantasy book.

I really enjoyed this more modern twist on fantasy! It was a little odd to get used to at first, but once I delved in I absolutely loved this storyline. If I had to pick a fantasy world to live in, I might just pick CC for the amenities. I laughed, I cried, and in true SJM fashion, had my heart ripped out a few times. Bryce and Hunt had great character development throughout and I cannot wait to see their story continue in the next book!
