This book continues the story of the post-apocalyptic haven called The Keep. Sold by her father to a brothel, 18 year old Britney is rescued by the men of the Keep, who give her to Alistair. Britney wants nothing to do with him, but strikes a bargain to submit to him if he rescues her little sister from their drunken father. But is it a bargain she can keep?

This is a violent world. Hard decisions must to be made in the light of changing alliances. But there are still moments of love and caring. I look forward to the next book in this series.

4.5 stars. Britney and Alistair, the lead characters, met when Alistair’s group saved Britney immediately after her father sold her as a sex slave for booze and sex for himself. Betrayed and horrified, Britney was determined to hate males forever, especially when she was assigned to Alistair for breeding purposes, since most of the world has died or turned into zombies.

Now, months later, Alistair, who is a genuinely nice guy, continues to patiently look after her, waiting for her to sort herself out. Britney feels guilty because her 12 year old sister is still with their father and decides to trade Alistair favours he wants in return for saving her sister. Then she discovers that intimacy is not as bad as she was expecting, actually is pretty good, but Alistair has disappeared on a secret mission, thinking that she hates him…

This story is dual POV, well written, and set in a dystopian world filled with zombies and a breeding necessity. Whilst this story is 7 books into the series, I was impressed that it stood alone. I think reading the others would enhance the experience but this was a great read on its own. I enjoyed the fact that Alistair was genuinely nice. Some of the other male leads are differently described but, whilst the situation wasn’t awesome, Alistair was. I empathised with Britney’s difficulty reconciling herself with her situation. I understood the choices she made and they were appropriate for her age and trauma. This story is not going to be suitable for all readers - thematically it’s quite dark; the author is really clear about that, but I enjoyed the style and found that, whilst dark, it wasn’t horrifying and it still finishes with a lovely HEA.

I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
