A nice, well-illustrated intro to the history of tattoos. It's a short book so by necessity the introduction is a brief one; if you're looking for something scholarly or in-depth, well, I don't know why you thought a "little book of knowledge" would be the tome you sought.

I can't speak to its accuracy but this isn't a book report and no one's paying me to fact-check it, so nyah.

December 2022 update:

Previous review stands, but I’d add that this book does seem to be much more thorough than your average “history of tattoos” that you find on the internet. (And when I say “average,” I’m talking only about reputable and recognizable sources.)

Also, it loses points for implying (in the introduction) that, thanks to epidurals, no one feels pain in childbirth anymore. HAHAHA NO.

I wish it went more in-depth into the history of current styles (traditional, neo-traditional, new school, etc.) but overall, I enjoyed this.

funny informative
interesting and succinct history of tattooing in different cultures around the world, but I couldn't get over these being presented as stories a warden is telling an incarcerated person in his care. Idk why the author felt it necessary to frame that way.

2.5 unfortunately! I know it’s always been straight/male-dominated but I want to learn about the rich history of women and queer people tatting and getting tatted! Also it talked about colonialism without really critiquing it which was weird. Ideally my history of tattoos and tattooing wouldn’t be from a prison warden’s perspective. Still learned some cool stuff though!

Oh and the text was the same tiny font on every page and it looked weird and was hard to read.
