Zoe Faust isn't the young, late-twenties that she appears. She's closer to 300 years old and has scars (emotional) to prove it. As she settles into a house for the first time in many, many years, odd things start happening. She meets a living stone gargoyle, her house is burglarized, people die and there is a new love interest!
A quick, enjoyable read with characters that I look forward to seeing again in the next book!

Below is my review from my first read of this fab book. This is a re-read as a listen and it's even better. I absolutely can recommend this book, series and author.
************
I have Gigi Pandian on my get-soonest list of authors. I highly enjoy reading her Jaya Jones series. I get the onto the Nook pretty much as soon as they are available for pre-order. Then I hold onto them to savor for just the right time to read. I don't want distractions and I want plenty of time to enjoy.
Then I saw she had another series, The Accidental Alchemist, and I hesitated. I worried that I wouldn't enjoy it as much and dim my regard for Gigi. I needn't have worried, silly me. This series is going to be just as awesome. I loved this first book and already added book 2, THE MASQUERADING MAGICIAN, to the Nook as soon as I finished the first one.
Such a cool premise of a woman, Zoe Faust, who accidentally turned herself almost immortal via alchemy while trying to help someone else. She is settling in Portland OR, a favorite setting of mine, she lives in a trailer but has bought a house and has a gargoyle in trouble move in with her. More secrets to keep.
There are several things I enjoyed most about the book. The characters are great, I didn't shudder when Zoe said she was a vegan, the setting of Portland, the history of alchemy which is not just turning lead into gold. Zoe works with plants, she has a connection with them.
I cannot wait to read the next book.
I can absolutely definitely recommend this author and this book and series.

DNF. Marked as read because I listened to 6 out of 9 hours.
I kept hoping it would get better and it didn't.

Quick and easy read. I was hoping for a series with a little more depth/substance, but it was a cute cozy mystery.
