The Legend of Charlie Fish by Josh Rountree

This is a short, quirky novella about found family and the mysteries of the world set just prior to and during the hurricane of 1900 that nearly leveled Galveston, Texas. The work is much like a folk tale told from different perspectives, and each perspective is finely created and perfectly employed to tell a story about very special orphans, a fish-man, a pair of scoundrels, a smart and ruthless woman, and the man who loves her. It's a fun read full of love for Galveston and perfect for a day at the beach there.

It was fine up until the end, which really hit me emotionally.

The author has a writing quirk of having one sentence as its own paragraph. It annoyed me almost every time it happened, and it happened a lot. Other than that the writing itself was fine. The characters were very loveable especially Nellie.

as someone who grew up in Texas and had been to Galveston more times that I can count, reading about it as this lawless wasteland (even in 1900) was fucking hilarious

This was almost a 5 for me. My only critique is that the cast of characters could've been more diverse. Otherwise, the story was compelling, moved at a brisk pace, kept me on the edge of my seat, and I really did love the main characters.
