Nonpareil poetry of our times, rich with context, metaphor, and detail that sings. Smith often pairs extended conceits with poetic turns that took my breath away and made me want to go back and reread immediately.

This was a super quick read, I finished it in one sitting. Lovely!

I have never been a huge poetry person but I wanted to pick this up because my school actually brought in the author of this book for a convocation last year! It's very cool now to read his writing having met him and heard him speak live. (He was extremely charismatic and funny.)

This was a great collection though. Many of these poems were gorgeous. My favorite was "For the Hardest Days."

This is definitely one of the most beautiful works of poetry that I have ever read. My heart broke with every page I turned.
Smith has such an excellent and devastating way of bringing social issues and the injustice that comes with being black in a white america.

Every poem broke my heart a little more, and every poem brought hope to me; if Smith is able to make pain so beautiful, then we - as a country have to be able to make that beauty tangible, we have to be able to have the tough talks, take the right steps, do the just things, and change the world we live in.

These poems need to cease to be relevant. These poems need to be a truth of the past, that we look back on and can’t believe it was the way of the world, while admiring Smiths grace with speaking these truths.

Clint Smith is brilliant. His poems dialogue with one another in such a complex and layered way that I know I’ll be re-reading this again and again. Such a strong collection (and should be read as a collection, in order, rather than piecemeal). Can’t wait to teach a few of these poems to my ninth graders next year!
