The Letter of Marque was a good read as are all the Aubrey-Maturin series, but the ending seemed anticlimactic. Everything to do with the letter of Marque (the privateer ship commanded by Aubrey) was done before the final CD. The last CD was just wrapping up Maturin's private life. It was satisfying, but not exactly action packed.

Here we have book #12 in this fabulous series recounting the naval adventures of Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin as they sail the seas while England battles Napoleon's France. The previous book, [b:The Reverse of the Medal|17983|The Reverse of the Medal (Aubrey/Maturin Book 11)|Patrick O'Brian|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1166855121s/17983.jpg|1052], ended with personal and professional disaster striking both of the main characters and it was such a relief to see things start to turn around for them in such exciting, satisfying ways. Also, the previous 11 books are so centered on the warships of the British Navy that it was interesting to get a glimpse into life on very different kinds of ships (a privateer, a transport). However, the biggest draw here for me is, as usual, the dialogue, the smart humor, the detailed language, and perhaps above all the wonderful, wonderful characters.

And boy, Maturin, it's time to lay off the drugs. Laudanum, coca leaves-- he needs an intervention or something.

WONDERFUL, AMAZING, INGENIOUS, GRIPPING, INTELLIGENT - applies to all of the series. Running out of superlatives. The best historical series of books in the English language.

So much is packed into this that it rattles along but a little less would’ve given space to breathe. A death occurs that I found sad for it removed a slight figure from the storyline & all their potential. Diane returns and has still the same affect on the Dr. #Spolier# no one goes up in a ballon.
