Obviously I understand these books are controversial and JK sickens me when she says trans women are not women... but equally I so admired the HP books that I started reading the Strike series to try to understand some of the controversy more

Now I haven't read any reviews of this yet - other than to say this book is problematic because the victim is a female cartoonist that is persecuted online which doesn't sound a million miles away from our author...

However, JK can spin a good yarn. I was compelled to read and enjoy this story for over 1200 pages. I wasn't even urging for the finish like I was in some of the other books in series that felt so long winded I didn't care if the main protagonists lived or died by the end, I just wanted her to get it over with and this one was longer!

I was fully invested in the story and had no idea until the end although felt slightly disappointed by our killer! I was also disappointed by the the will they-won't they ongoing story of Strike and Robin.

Now on to read a load of more insightful reviews that I will make me dislike what I have read!

The first 600 pages of this book are slow.   And I mean slow.  It's a lot of character and plot building.  I also cannot ignore the author's insertion of themselves into the first victims shoes.   It actually reminds me of the authors 2nd book, the silkworm,  in which she makes a rather pointed critique of authors inserting themselves into their own text "nobody likes me,  nobody understands me".  (Or something to that effect.)

It's really hard to separate the ink black heart from the author's personal life and feelings about people having opinions on social media in response to her transphobic comments.  And frankly detracts from the book.

I wanted to like this book more than I did and there were certainly parts that were entertaining and suspenseful.  But if you weren't already invested in the cormoran strike books it's not worth the read.
