eh I would get into it at times but more often than not found myself rather uninterested in the rarely interrupted stream of consciousness of the protagonist, would be curious to read it all over again from Merry’s perspective…
I kind of liked the beginning, but then it became a literal slog. So boring. So repetitive. Ugh.

I loved the dialogue, the character sketches, and the arc of the narrative. Roth captures the pursuit of "the American Dream," and puts a terrific Jewish spin on it.
There were probably only two wee scenes with which I would quibble.
Highly recommended.

Rich. Intensively personal insights. The high points of a young age giving way to agonizing fears of later years.
Roth's novels are some of the most thought-provoking of any others I've read.

A beautifully written rendition of Roth's version of American Jewish life and relationships and parenting and marriage. Roth seems to give the sense that everyone must experience things as he does, and this authority of tone often rings hollow because his experiences are not universal.
I did it! I finished a Philip Roth book. I feel like I just ran my first marathon without all the wonderful endorphins at the end. I ran through the finish line with nothing but mind-numbing agony to comfort me.
It is times like these I resent my mother for instilling in me the "don't quit" gene. If I didn't have that I would have stopped at the first chapter. It is long, redundant, annoying and god, does that man like to hear himself talk.
Never have I read a book in more need of an editor. I am so excited to get to start a new book after this that it could be crap but in comparison I will never know the difference.

No. Couldn't even get to page 100: so tedious, nothing pulling me onward. And I so wanted to find out why the rave reviews, but no.
