Wow it took me forever to read this book. Remarkable in how thorough and researched and exhausting it was. But man it felt like a tedious slog. So much of the book was Zuckerman or the Swede just going on and on about some shit. I’m not gonna tell Philip Roth how to write a book. Maybe I’m just very tired and dumb.

A 5 Star Book that Requires Skimming

Can a book that you skim large sections of still be worthy of 5 stars? Yes, if it's American Pastoral. While the book could have been summed up in a short essay, Roth's writing is so beautiful and compelling that it deserves all of its accolades. An intimate portrait of America during a time of great upheaval.

This was really well-written but man is it hard to get invested in 400 pages located in the headspace of an absolute simpleton. I know that's kind of the point, but come on.

Sorry if this is short. I'm no Roth.
Spoiler.
Blah, blah, blah. Mr Perfect has problems, too.
