I don’t know how I feel about this book. At first, it hooked me and I was really settling into binge mode. But so many things jarred me.
- The misogyny is actually painful to read, like I had to skim some parts because it was just TOO much. I get that it’s the culture of Orea but it felt like it was being shoved down my throat in excess
- I’m sure this book holds a Guinness record for the amount of times c*nt is said
- The sexual imagery is actually so icky, from start to finish. Vomiting in my mouth, tbh
- Auren was kind of disappointing. She does nothing, basically, for like 80% of the book
- There’s this hint of Not Like Other Girls about her and it’s not the gilding that I’m talking about. Why do all the women hate her to such a degree?? If they’re saddles (a term I focken despise btw) then they KNOW the deal???
- There was also just a lot of new plot thrown in every few chapters and it was disorienting. It was hard to pin down where it was going
Despite this, that twist really knocked me the hell out and I’m taking a chance on book 2. Digby has also burrowed into my heart and I need to know he’s okay!

The base concept of this is great but it is unfortunately completely filled with disgusting men and majority of it was sexual violence on page. I know I was warned, but for the amount that happened the main character definately escaped far too much and it ended up just stressing me out with how times many there was a close call.
Other than that the magic system is really cool and I am looking forward to finding out more since I have heard the books get far better.
