Actually 0 stars. I hated this book. I absolutely hated how it tied in to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Just leave it be!! Urgh.
Starts out as an interesting story that is ruined with long ramblings and gross descriptions of hunting animals.

I f*&^ing love Captain Nemo but he's only in two chapters of this sequel. Verne's knowledge and enthusiasm for science and the natural world are great but the whole book was basically just a really long description of how the castaways conquered/destroyed nature and built everything they had left behind. Completely unrealistic and ultimately it became boring and annoying how everything worked out perfectly for them. The phrase "nothing could have been simpler" is repeated over and over but WHY exactly are they trying to build a telegraph line on a deserted island. The depictions of the main characters were shallow and sometimes racist. Still some parts were exciting and charming. I almost always hate the idea of abridged versions but I would consider it in this case.
P.S. It's obvious this book was a major inspiration for the TV series Lost. :)
