"I am certain they never dreamt that a lovely little mermaid was standing down below, stretching up her white hands towards the keel."

i love how heavily its implied the witch used the mermaids to make herself beautiful without blatantly being said and i love the misery in this story

when considering this represents andersens unrequited love for a man who ended up in a marriage with a women , there's a certain level of depth behind the ending sequence, once the little mermaid is alone she can finally fully grieve what she deep down knew, the prince never loved her as she loved him and never would, only once she is invisible to him can she feel this. #sadgayhours frfr im also assuming the witch represents how he views his friends wife, since she takes all the wonder and charm mermaid has while simultaneously being apart of of the princes world #heteromoment

basically, andersen wrote a pretty good short story about being down bad for a straight guy

i only wish there wasn't such a feeling of hope attached to being made a child of the wind as it takes a way from the misery of her death for me, but that's just cuz i like emo writing
