A very brief novel, more of a novella, about two lonely young people who find it hard to figure out how to love each other, while guarding and fostering the light within themselves. I'm not entirely convinced by the voice purporting to be of a 17 year old boy, but as usual Le Guin provides some lovely quotable passages and a thoughtful, richly human story.

What a wonderful story, although this may be a coming of age story for young adults, adults can learn and enjoy it as well.

Ooh I love coming-of-age books from the 60s and 70s. Caledonia typeface. Words like "drip" and "dolt" and "feeble." And how they're all quietly emulating Catcher in the Rye. This one is no exception. Le Guin just has a way of putting all those gut-wrenching feelings into words without sounding cliche. Yeah. Dig it.

I loved the first half of this book. Unfortunately, the book is too short for only the first half to be lovable. I felt like it set me up to expect a story that would feel authentically heartwarming and would diverge from the bland, stereotype-affiming trope to which it ultimately ended up adhering. Rather disappointing.
