I think it’s a 2.5. It took me forever to get through this book because it could be so cringy that I couldn’t handle reading it. It would’ve been better as a 400 page book. I think she could have done better with the romance, it felt like a never ending cycle of them fighting about the other staying safe, fighting about not trusting each other, almost dying and then having sex and then fighting again. My favorite part of Xaden last book was his faith in Violet’s abilities but that went away for a majority of this book. That being said, I still loved her squad mates and her relationship with her family and the ending of the book got me really excited for the next one. I just hope this was just the worst book in a really good series.

this is getting a 3 star rating just like book 1 because it also just NEEDED AN EDITOR!!! so bad!! but had SO much potential! it was not as gripping as fourth wing, it didn’t have me quite as obsessed but what the book was trying to do i thought was way more interesting than fourth wing:

**minor spoiler ahead esp if you haven’t read fourth wing yet**

miss yarros got SO CLOSE. sosososo close!!!!!! and then missed the whole dang point– the refugees fleeing, border restrictions, letting innocent children and families die just because they’re from another country, ordinary civilians unfairly facing the consequences of their country’s poor leadership and being mercilessly slaughtered by people who are only interested in amassing more power and are overtaken by their own greed—it could’ve culminated in SUCH an amazing commentary on the global refugee crisis and the southern border of the US. but it didn’t!! because the solution to all that was “we need more military but specifically the NICE military

Might pick it back up but Violet was pissing me off acting entitled to secrets that weren’t hers or Xaden’s
