Are you absolutely, all the way kidding me. That was amazing. I am freakin speechless right now. I can’t even think right now. My brain is everywhere and nowhere all at once. Am I real? Is this book real? Is this author for freaking real?! What!! Incredible.

Sequel to Fourth Wing where we follow Violet and Xaden's first year apart has he is stationed after graduation and she is in her second year at school. They get to see each other every week since their dragons are bonded, but the villians do everything to keep the two of them apart. Violet is determined to learn more about the revolution since Xaden is still keeping secrets from her, which is causing a strain in their relationship. Violet focuses on figuring out how the wards were put in place to protect the land south of the current wards where the revolution is making camp. Along the way she encounter Xaden's ex - a Griffon rider from beyond the wards. The smut was great and the ending literally ripped my heart out. Didn't give a full 5 stars because the writing wasn't as good as the first, and this is definitely a set up book for the books to come. High hopes for the rest of this series. I think about the characters in this every day.

This follow-up to "Fourth Wing" did not disappoint. It continued with non-stop action, twists and turns, and romance to make for terrific storytelling. It'll be hard to wait another year for the next book.

The only thing keeping this from being a full 4 stars is the fact that the author clearly has favorite descriptor words and phrases that don't actually do much for the scene. Their continued use can get annoying and take you out of the moment.

That said, it's not a bad read/listen. There are quite a few moments that are fairly predictable but just enough twists to keep you guessing. I did feel quite a bit of emotion at the end so kudos to the author/narrator for being able to immerse the reader in such a tear-jerking scene.

I also feel like this book could have been split into two, because the amount of information that is in both "parts" can get hard to keep up with after so long. The twist at the last two chapters had me gasping. Now, I must suffer the wait.
