The only complaint I have for this book is how long it took
violet to realize that he wasn’t keeping secrets to hurt her
like girl get your shit together

F*************k 😱 Ok so, starting with what I didn’t like: there was a lot of “waaah I can’t trust him, even though I also keep secrets from my friends who are way more understanding than I am to my bf who could literally die if he tells his secrets”. Call me a Xaden apologist or whatever but Violet was annoying the living hell out of me at some points. The not-like-other girls business got worse in this book, I felt she was more arrogant and even her insecurity felt like a form of narcissism? Or maybe I was just annoyed with her and it was clouding my judgement. I kept getting attached to side characters that just end up dying. I think there were scenes in the book that did little to advance the plot, and it made the story just insanely long without satisfying the need to move things along. I wanted to enjoy the relationship between the main characters, but the arguing and fighting about the same thing over and over was giving more “flashbacks of my ex” than “romance” but hopefully the next book irons that out and develops their relationship in a more healthy direction. Altogether though there was some spice, some action, some twists. The end had me 😱 idk how I will live till Jan

Slow first half of the story - but paced amped up in the second half ! Can’t wait for the next book!
What a cliffhanger!

This book took me 4 months to finish. I enjoyed reading it while I was actively reading, but when I put it down it was hard to pick it back up again. And it is quite long.

It often annoyed me that the same tropes were used from the first book or just repeated in this book, especially the bullying and the war college leadership being idiotic, obstinate adults.

The leadership are often stupid and stubborn with little reason given. For one, many of them bully Violet just because they want to and hate her. Or the silly college rules that let the cadets fight each other and generates animosity between them.

I often lost the urge to read because of the bully tropes that Yarros insists on using. It seems to be the only way she knows how to create conflict in the plot; with schoolyard bullies. It happened in the first book, and when one was taken care of in this book they were immediately replaced with another bully. It’s not a super enjoyable reading experience for me, and it’s annoying that these bullies are so over the top.

Also I am really upset about a certain bully character being present. There was literally no reason for leadership to have brought back this person. They didn’t have any information, they didn’t provide any strategic support; Yarros just brought them back to shock readers.

I put this on par with the first book. Definitely more heavy on the trigger warnings. There are some absolutely brutal scenes that make deaths from the first book seem tame. Don't take that warning in the beginning of the book lightly. That being said, this book plays on all the emotions and is just wonderfully written.
