I wanted to like this one so much, but I have to admit I'm pretty disappointed. What I liked most was the mystery - I really wanted to know how Jane got displaced from her time period and how the situation would be resolved. Would Jane go back to the 70s, or stay in the present? I also really loved the side characters - Myla, Niko, Wes, Isaiah, and the even the Billy's crew. But that's where my enjoyment ended.

From hearing people online talk about Jane, I thought I'd fall in love with her; instead I found both August and Jane to be at best boring, at worst annoying. While I was curious about the mystery of whether or not Jane would return to the 70s, I realized I wouldn't have even been upset if the main couple was separated and Jane had gone back to the past. I was more upset about
Billy's potentially closing down,
which had nothing to do with August and Jane's relationship.

There were a few other minor things that also bothered me. I was honestly shocked that August hadn't realized that
Auggie and Jane lived in New Orleans at the same time
despite the fact that August was essentially trained from birth to be a private investigator and investigate Auggie's disappearance. I was also surprised that in the year 2021, no one in the entire relatively intelligent cast (with the exception of Jane, who has an excuse being from the 70s and not familiar with the internet) had considered an online fundraiser when they found out that
Billy's was going to shut down.
In the age of kickstarter and gofundme, I can't believe this wasn't the first response. Though I admit the
drag show fundraiser
was a way cooler idea, an online fundraiser could have still helped raise the rest of the money.

Maybe I'm being too picky. But I have to say I had much higher hopes for this book with the many, many stellar reviews that I saw. It's not bad, but it's definitely overrated. (Though I can't judge too much since I know we're all starved for sapphic content).

This is the second book of the year for the bookclub!

In the beginning I really liked it, but then during the middle I didn’t love is as much after talking to a friend about the book. But then later on I liked it again, but (!) the end, I’m sorry but it made me disappointed! I had hope for at least five other ways the book could end on that I thought would be a more real end but it was still interesting to read!

I don’t know why, but I couldn’t picture the characters appearance a lot of the time :( and I mixed up Nico and Was which was annoying!

It was a nice book to read and discuss with friends about! I didn’t love it but it was still a good book!

Took me exactly 11 hours to read!

i might be biased bc i read my partner’s annotated version but i completely forgot how much of a sucker i am for wattpad-y romcoms sometimes. i enjoyed one last stop a lot. it left me with tears in my eyes, trying not to laugh out loud in the train and on the edge of my seat. i had so much fun with it, the only aspects that don’t sit right with me are the sex and making out scenes in the train but i guess it was to be expected and at the end that’s just where the story unfolded itself. also, the chapters could’ve been kept shorter, imo

but all in all, fun read

It feels so odd that Jane, the love interest, is conceptually far more interesting than August- yet August is the central perspective and Jane is written to have no autonomy whatsoever. August isn't terribly written character, but I found her so unlikable by virtue of being the main character.

I'd forgive the book for trying to be a "lighthearted" read or whatever, but the implications of Jane's circumstances/experiences, and the references to real life tragedies that queer people faced- I have to wonder, why was this the premise for a romcom? I don't find it disgusting or immoral, just an extremely odd decision. I do not understand this book.

Also, whatever the humor style in this book is... I do not care for it.

I started this book three months ago, at what would turn out to be the tail end of a long-ass reading slump, and that's a shame because it deserves to be read in one fell swoop, not me picking it up where I left off having forgotten details. so I'd like to reread it someday and take it all in at once. this felt much more grounded to me than McQuiston's first book, Red, White & Royal Blue (which was something I complained about at the time in my review of the ARC), which is kind of funny because that one was ostensibly grounded in reality while this one has time travel. but I'm really glad because it serves the novel very well, and McQuiston is good at grounded versus the overwrought antics of RWRB (there's a bit of that in here but it's minimally used for humor, as it should be, not leading the story). this is what all romance novels should strive to be, and I say that as someone who enjoys romance. so fully realized that the romance serves the characters instead of the other way around.
