3.5/5 ✨

I don’t even know where to begin with this one. It was uncomfortable, unhinged, a little confusing at times, and full of violent feminism. I kinda loved it?

It was pretty difficult to get into from the start, and I was honestly still struggling to find the thing that hooked me to this read well after the halfway mark. If it weren’t for the fact that I was buddy reading this, I might have given up on it. It was super wordy, had unnecessarily long flashbacks, and random history lessons that Maeve’s character deemed important, but I was unsure were really needed. But through some of that boredom, I still was desperate to know how everything was going to come together in the end, and there were plenty of quotable moments along the way to keep my interest steady enough. All the uncomfortable and vivid explanations were definitely one of the highlights of this book, and one of the reasons I had picked it out to begin with.

That said, the last few chapters of this read absolutely took it out of the park. The last 30 to 20 (ish) percent of this book had me locked in for the wild ride it took you on. I laughed when I shouldn’t have and definitely had my jaw on the floor (pun intended for those who have read this) for some of Maeve’s final descent. It was wondrously chaotic and extremely uncomfortable.

Also, I would like to note that I did initially try to read this with the audiobook, but I couldn’t stand the narrator, so probably wouldn’t recommend that if you’re looking to read this one.

This was definitely something. It had “I’m not like other girls” and “men do it better” energy, but there’s also feminist social commentary running underneath it all. It was “I’m dead inside Tumblr 2010 emo chic”-except she actually IS rotten, cruel, murderous and twisted. And so full of love.
It was an easy, fairly fast-paced read with some splatterpunk elements that, thankfully, didn’t get dragged out unnecessarily. The same goes for the very minimal smut (emphasis on VERY minimal).
This book definitely has that October-Halloween vibe, since that’s basically the backdrop the characters are set into. If it’s on your TBR, spooky season might be the perfect time to pick it up! :)

Loved the concept of this and I love unhinged female characters but certain plot points I felt just went nowhere, and it seemed just slightly too try hard
