Pretty average. Probably best for someone who's never been introduced to the concepts of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. It's not really a guide on how to practice, but a memoir. I was disappointed when Hugh writes about his wife not experiencing the highs of life whilst on antidepressants. That sadly may have been the case for her, but I think authors need to be careful. Some may read that and avoid essential treatment because of fear of medication. It was just a small thing but it bugged me. I also don't believe that gratitude should be based on comparing your life to someone with less. The whole book was just a little superficial for my liking.
Moments of this had substance, particularly the first half, which I did enjoy. Much of the latter half of the book detailed the success of the project and focused on van Cuylenburg name dropping elite sportspeople, without really elaborating on how to be Empathetic, Mindful or express Gratitude.
The concept had promise, but it just seemed like a missed opportunity to genuinely connect with a wider audience on these practices and integrate evidence too.

I think this would be much better as the live talk by Hugh, but it’s still a worthwhile read especially if you’re something struggling with anxiety or other wellbeing issues.

I first came across this book when it was highlighted in a Leadership course I took a couple of years ago and I knew I wanted to read the whole book, not just a snippet. I’m so glad I finally did. Like many books in this “self-help”genre, there’s many things I’ve heard before (and sometimes remember to apply) but this author’s personal stories and delivery style is so engaging, this time it may just stick! Well worth a read.
