I would rate this 6 stars if I could.

Read this in elementary school and know I liked it but couldn't actually remember anything. Just reread it at 32 y/o and wow it's great. Small and mighty. Glad they added the Ever After chapter explaining the ambiguous ending 👍🏻

A highly effective YA dystopian science-fiction story about growing up and learning to make decisions. It is blunt, gets to the point quickly, and enables the reader to make their own minds up about the ending. I love getting to know more about the society behind the story in books like this, so I would love to have more there (a prequel with a behind the scenes view would fit that perfectly for me) but for the purposes of this book it would have taken away from the heart of the story being told.

I don't feel the need to read other books in the quartet as I am satisfied with my interpretation of the ending and how the story as a whole ran. It may not satisfy all but it worked for me.

Disturbing, fascinating, and ultimately beautiful, this is a classic for a reason.

This was a well told story. Interesting read. When Jonas is at the aging ceremony he finds out he's not going into the workforce. Instead he has been selected to be the next memory receiver. Jonas has never heard of the position, but he knows it's special because of the way everyone starts to treat him. When he meets the giver he's not sure what to think.

Very good book
Was surprised with the ending though
and learning how the other books in the series never go back to the community
Was surprised when The Giver revealed the failed Receiver was his daughter but very good
Was surprised when revealed Release was death, thought maybe people get released into cruel world but this is better
Ending surprising is cliffhanger not fully clear what happens if book was standalone
Not a bad surprise though
