second book I read by Steinbeck and I definitely don't understand what impact his writing had. I agree the themes of community and brotherhood are somehow important but writing Of Mice and Men and making only the last 20 pages interesting is not an advantage...

Another stunningly beautiful tale told by John Steinbeck. In a mere hundred pages, Steinbeck paints character portraits so rich and real that i could see and feel them. What a heartbreaking, yet inevitable ending to this short but powerful story of grace, love, and trust, and of the triumph of love in spite of, and in the midst of a tragic, horrible ending. It is the mark of a great author to leave the reader in a state of awe and of shock at the ending of a story, even knowing that this ending was inevitable, and even expected. Welcome, John Steinbeck, to my list of favorite authors.

Though short, it brings up some heavy decisions of the people in the book, some are a bit rough for me to even think about and a few characters do things without a second thought (heartless). You find yourself thinking if you would have made the same decisions and they're not so heartless. I think that people who are into psychoanalysis/Freud would make a ton of assumptions I don't think have merit, instead I think one guy has traits of autism and the other guy found a companion. Give yourself a day or two to read it.

I read this book in high school and it is still one of my favorite books. This story of an unbelievable, amazing friendship and dreams that will break your heart is something that I still carry with me. It is a fast read but one that will last you forever.

Challenging myself to read a few classics this year (or audiobook).

Started with this because I studied it at school. Younger me had zero empathy and I completely forgot the end.
