A different take on a world that knows about vampires. Not bad, but I just couldn't get into these characters. I also felt like this book could've either got cut shorter or expanded into a series. It just didn't work with the length as a standalone for me.

I enjoyed this book, but I also felt like it could have been two separate books. Everything was a little rushed, I think the whole story takes place over 3-ish days. But in that time
Spoiler Tana has two vampire bites/ I'm going Cold scares. She falls in love with a boy she had never met before who is super old and also the most OP vampire ever, heals the relationship with her ex, and murder a reality star.
I liked the action and it had a few good twists in it. And at least none of the vampires sparkled.

2.5/5? I read it in one sitting, so I definitely enjoyed it and was certainly caught up in it! The writing was very beautiful, and although the characters suffered from YA-syndrome (
Spoilerlove interest going head-over-heels for an otherwise average girl, relationships and trust developing far too fast, protagonist making really awful decisions but getting away with it unpunished -- that sort of thing
) it hasn't been the worst case of it I've ever seen. I think the beautiful writing did a lot to distract me from this, because although I was aware of Tana making rather awful decisions, I didn't became so fed up with her that I put the book down.

The world-building was interesting and pretty well done, and the cut-aways never too irritating. I wanted to see more of
SpoilerLucian, Gavriel & Elisabet's time together
, however!

While I enjoyed the book overall, the ending was a bit of a letdown. It quickly became a convoluted mess, and
SpoilerPearl's little adventure felt very rushed and tacked on, as if it were a just a rushed plot device to get Tana to have to stay in Coldtown. Oh wait...
