This is a nice feel-good, reflective, taking chances, and second chances story. Told in Laurel, Paris, and Cassies POV's. A strong character driven story that is medium paced with closed door romance. A good beach read for the summer. Trigger warnings are child abuse, death, and infidelity. Takes place in California.

I love Susan Mallery's books, and while The Summer Book Club didn't move me as much as some of her others have, it was still a beautiful story and I'm glad I didn't miss it! Laurel and Paris are best friends who take Cassie under their wing and into their book club when she moves to Los Lobos after getting kicked out of the family home by her brother and sister. All Cassie wants to do from the moment she arrives is to leave again, but then her friendship with the other women starts to solidify and she even gains a love interest which then leads her to some challenging decisions. I loved the way all 3 of the women grew throughout the book and how Cassie especially blossomed by the end.
The one thing I do wish was that the audiobook had included more than one narrator and even though I did love Tanya Eby, the viewpoints felt rather muddled for me. The story is told through Laurel, Paris, and Cassies POVs, and even though they are different people with different things going on, they ended up feeling rather similar to me. I also wished the book club aspect was more prominent in the storyline considering it's in the actual title, but be that as it may, this was still a heartwarming read about second chances. There was also the perfect amount of humor and romance mixed in and overall was a very feel-good read that I would 100% recommend be tossed (gently and lovingly) into your beach bag this summer.
