Great idea but not well executed. While some of the inner thought streams were funny, for the most part the three protagonists were some of the most annoying literary characters that have ever been written and it took me forever to get through the book. I wanted to know what happened but I just couldn't connect with any of them... and didn't want to even by the end.

The dialogue could also be really awkward; for example, a 38-year old woman calling her best friend her "BFF" - and not ironically or jokingly - when she introduces her to other people, and even calls her that in her head when she thinks about her. Cringed every time. When the author wanted to set a scene or give the reader information, she had the characters discuss it via one of them telling the other one, even though they both already know the information. Like those books when someone says "I made your favorite! Lasagna!" like they don't know what their own favorite food is? Only this was "hey, did you get her text?" after which the other responds by saying yes and then tells the other the entire contents of the text that they were both on and had both already read. And asking if the other was ready for book club THAT NIGHT to which the other one responds that yes, she already bought the book and included the name of the book, talking to another member of the same book club who is reading the same book. And the 11- and 12- year-olds spoke like pre-programmed automatons. It's very hard to connect with a story and the characters when the conversations are written so unrealistically.

Lastly, the characters were inconsistent. Cassie's whole backstory was about how guys always broke up with her and she was stuck in her old life and had never even loved anywhere else than the apartment where she'd lived since she was born and her family had to kick her out of the house to get her to do something with her life. But when she intentionally tried to sabotage a relationship and then felt bad about and the guy said "so you're going to run?" And she responded "It's all I know." Huh?! Cassie had never run anywhere period, so it made no sense for her character. And when Colton told Laurel in very plain, simple terms how he felt about her, she ranted afterward about what did he mean and why was he so confusing. He couldn't have been any more straightforward.

That was probably more of a vent but if I enjoy a book, I can read it in a matter of hours. This one took well over a week and I just had to bite the bullet to finish it so I could turn it into the library (already overdue). Sigh. I wish I liked the writing style better because I could really get behind the storyline otherwise.

It was a nice story, one of the few I've read with a truly ensemble cast where I could keep the characters straight. I hadn't realized it would be an open door romance and wouldn't have read it if I'd known.

to much self pity
