Geweldig boek waarin briljant door de tijd wordt geschoten. Prachtige contrasten tussen hoe de hoofdpersoon door anderen wordt gezien en zijn binnenwereld.

The title may turn you off - but the book is really very good. Old Filth is a Raj orphan, a child of an English ex-pat removed from his family in Malaya and sent to England to be educated. Sad story about cruelty and the consequences of growing up without love.

This was a lovely read. Fascinating story about a man, and it flips back and forth time-wise, but it was so well written and engaging that it flows very well. It's a great story about human nature and life.

I found the book to be often bewildering and mostly boring. The author quietly sneaks in a firecracker of a chapter towards the end but all in all, I could not connect with the characters or story.

What a beautifully written, moving book. Loved it and can't wait to discover more of Jane Gardham's gentle humorous writing.

Another fun read about a male character. The prose is a bit difficult to follow sometimes because of interjections by different characters (and sometimes it's hard to tell who's doing the interjecting), but the story is lovely. Many colorful places, people and eras get woven together as an old man remembers his life. The book is interesting in one respect because the reader is given a sense of the wonderful reputation Old Filth has as a lawyer and a judge, and yet that part of his life is not described at all in his memories. A good reminder that we are much more than our work.
