Un racconto vitale e straziante

A daughter's lament and tribute to her mother - and all mothers who protected the Tutsi children of Rwanda. While there are uplifting memories of humor and community, the undercurrent of horror and sadness is hard to escape. Because the reader knows what's coming, it's tempting to look away. Dont. Do not look away.

A gorgeous little gem of a book and a glimpse into the world that displaced peoples make for themselves when they are robbed of their own world. Additionally, a love letter to the author's mother, who sounds like a lady to be loved, awed by, and on the right side of.

This book is stunningly beautiful and devastatingly sad.

It feels difficult to review this because we know throughout the book that the author's mother was murdered during the genocide, which makes the book feel sacred in a way; it is a daughter's offering to her murdered mother. Overall, I thought the writing and portrayals of her mother and life leading up to the genocide were beautiful, despite the violence already surrounding them. The way she captures life is so striking and engaging, and she really creates a sense of intimacy between the reader and the narrative throughout the book. I read Aiding Violence several years ago, which describes the role of Western aid organizations in the genocide, and found that it provided a helpful knowledge base for understanding the significance of the author's commentary on the disruptive and violent presence of white people in Rwanda.

This is a story told with such love and such grief, it will leave its mark on you for a very long time. Painstaking detail over the intricacies of a life lived in community, and an unflinching narrative of the violence which has caused such devastation there
