Having tried starting another book and failing to have it hold my attention, I switched it out for this one and found myself basically unable to function. I had to read this book. I haven’t switched on my TV since I started this one—that’s how much I needed to keep reading it. Tretch—while he may have had a weird name, he was very easy to sympathise with and cheer for. His plight may not have been anything ground breaking, but it reeled you in with its loveable characters and kept you wanting the best for them. Finding a YA book with a good coming out story 10 years back when I was a teenager was next to impossible, so it makes me happier to know that books like this one are out there now.

I am a sucker for these kinds of books. This is about Tretch, (a nickname, he is Richard the third), somehow it combines into Tretch. He is a 15 year old boy who is gay and it's a coming out/coming of age story. Very sweetly done and I loved every bit of it. The happy and funny parts as well as the sad and worrisome parts. I love that I can read these books and learn about other people. A wonderful debut from Will Walton.

It was a decent read. The book's well written, the plot moves along nicely, and I liked a few of the characters. It just didn't blow me away. I found a lot of the characters to be kind of bland, and the voices all kind of sounded the same at certain moments.
As for Tretch though, at some points I found him to be a really intriguing and interesting character, and then all of a sudden he was very bland and melodramatic, yet then he'd also have these moments of saying/thinking really profound and significant thoughts. He was kind of all over the place, which given what he's going through is understandable and all. It just felt a bit much.
However, I'm kind of a sucker for a unrequited love story, and can even sympathise to a degree. That element of this book just had me hooked.

that was probably the worst book ive read all year. undiluted cringe shot directly into my veins. the dialogue...oof. dunno why i thought id enjoy something i put on my tbr in 2015. extremely dated but not in like an interesting or funny way
