Having tried starting another book and failing to have it hold my attention, I switched it out for this one and found myself basically unable to function. I had to read this book. I haven’t switched on my TV since I started this one—that’s how much I needed to keep reading it. Tretch—while he may have had a weird name, he was very easy to sympathise with and cheer for. His plight may not have been anything ground breaking, but it reeled you in with its loveable characters and kept you wanting the best for them. Finding a YA book with a good coming out story 10 years back when I was a teenager was next to impossible, so it makes me happier to know that books like this one are out there now.

I am a sucker for these kinds of books. This is about Tretch, (a nickname, he is Richard the third), somehow it combines into Tretch. He is a 15 year old boy who is gay and it's a coming out/coming of age story. Very sweetly done and I loved every bit of it. The happy and funny parts as well as the sad and worrisome parts. I love that I can read these books and learn about other people. A wonderful debut from Will Walton.

It was a decent read. The book's well written, the plot moves along nicely, and I liked a few of the characters. It just didn't blow me away. I found a lot of the characters to be kind of bland, and the voices all kind of sounded the same at certain moments.

As for Tretch though, at some points I found him to be a really intriguing and interesting character, and then all of a sudden he was very bland and melodramatic, yet then he'd also have these moments of saying/thinking really profound and significant thoughts. He was kind of all over the place, which given what he's going through is understandable and all. It just felt a bit much.

However, I'm kind of a sucker for a unrequited love story, and can even sympathise to a degree. That element of this book just had me hooked.

I used to work at the same bookshop as Will and reading this book made me miss working with him and at Avid.

I am not giving this five stars because the author is my local bookseller, or because in my head the main character looked eerily like him, but because it is a book about being a teen, and being gay, and being in love with your best friend. It is all that and more.

I finished this about a week ago and there was nothing inherently wrong with this book, but... nothing happens. While a drama-free book can be refreshing, this just entirely lacked a plot and never went anywhere.

The only delightful scene in the entire book was when
SpoilerTretch comes out to book girl, whose name I think was Lauren? and pretty much is like yep we're friends now
.

“No one need think my love for Taylor Swift is a joke. It’s like some people are embarrassed to like Taylor Swift or something. Not me. In fact, if anyone ever stopped me and asked, “Tretch Farm, who would you say is the voice of your generation?” I would say Taylor Swift, hands down, no competition.”

Quotes like this are what made me adore this book. The little things that Will Walton just seemed to get, this book had me laughing and feeling warm all the way through. Tretch, the protagonist, is a very interesting character and his love for music is something I loved about him. When he first hears Anything Could Happen, he notices the 'eeh's' but by the end it feels like the songs meaning has changed for him and
Spoiler the end scene in which he sings the line "I don't think I need you" right at Matt was very powerful for me
.

The family problems were also very touching but I was definitely more interested in the romantic aspect of this book than I was anything else those were the parts where I was both rushing to read on but trying to pace myself because I didn't want to miss anything.

Having said that, I completely adored this book and even the aspects that weren't as interesting to me still were very interesting. I'll finish with a quote to show you why I enjoyed this book so much.

Sometimes, when I love a book, I need to get out to finish it. And I mean, get out - like, go someplace where I feel like the ending gill be all the more moments
