This is my reread of the series in preparation for the release of Goldfinch later this year. I still very much enjoy the growing relationship between Auren and Rip and I love that she finally starts to find her way to herself. Already knowing the major plot points it was fun to remeet Lu, Judd and Osrik and I am still a great fan of the Wrath. Malina is still obnoxious and entitled and I still think she deserved all that happened to her for being such a horrible monarch. However, I still think her plotlines are super important for the overall story and she is definitely not my least favourite monarch (looking at you Midas).

Ergh. Predicable. Boring. Even skimming this was tedious. Barely any plot. And far far too much inner narrative from the first person narratives of the handful of POV characters. And only if brief scene of spice by queen Malina. Thankfully no traumatic violence from book one.

Was much better than the first book which gave us absolutely nothing. Finally got some actual romance and action. Not really sure why the first book was necessary, let alone separate in the first place.

ALSO: There were literally more r*pe scenes than there were cute romantic moments. And the cute little main character never gets harmed because of course.  


*SPOILER ALERT*

Also I don't know if this will be explained in the next book yet, but why did Midas see King Rot and Rip in the same room, like actively looked between them in a sentence ("I look between him and his commander." pg. 437), if they are the same person? Is this a plot hole or will it be explained later? Did King Rot lie about being Rip to trick Auren or something? I really do not know. I suppose I will find out. However, Rip being King Rot was predictable but I still lost it at the plot twist.
