Less smuttier than the 1st. Hard to get back into it immediately having read the 1st book a few days ago. First 20 pages are a miss for me but then could not put it down after.

Okay!! I liked this one way more than the first book. It’s giving me Tamlin vs Rhys vibes a bit but is unique enough that it doesn’t feel like a copy+paste situation. There’s way more movement with the plot and the twists at the end were good. I’m looking forward to book 3!

Is it the best book ever written? No. Is it extremely entertaining? Yes!! Even though the style of writing can be annoying and confusing I am enjoying the plot. It was much better than the first book in the series. I loved the tension between Auren and Rip.
The ending is what got me literally screaming!! That cliffhanger!!

Though the book mainly occurs in one spot/context, the character development improves from the first book. Hard to put down!

Omg! That ending! I did not guess that commander Rip is King Rot.  Holy shit, was that book good.  I love the side characters, the humble army.  What a slow burn, but you can tell the Rip was making her strong and how he wanted her to stay.  Read this in a day.  I can’t wait to jump into the next book.  I totally left Brandi in the dust.

It is only when writing this review that I realise that the majority of the book took place within the Fourth army. I did enjoy the new characters that we got introduced to and that Auren seems to grow a bit in this book and by the end we can see who she may become through out the rest of the series.
I think I preferred the camp life compared to the previous setting of the palace and the travelling. It gives you a chance to settle in a bit more and get to know the characters that I have no doubt will keep coming up in the series.
I was also surprised that we got chapters from Queen Malina POV. I'm not sure how I feel about her. I am kind of invested to see what she can do but I also feel like her dislike for Auren is very superficial, but I'm here to see if there is character growth for her throughout the series or if she just becomes a one dimensional villain for the plot.
