This was a rather "meh" read, in my opinion. It held my attention, and the audio book version was a nice listen, but it was rather disappointing that the main character didn't get alot of "HELL YEAH" moments.
The whole thing with the stag also felt a bit weird. It played a big part of the end game, but didn't feel like it got a proper lead up.

3/5. Not a bad read, not a favorite.

broooo 4.5/5 this book was so good im actually shocked usually im not into ya and def not into fantasy so when i picked this up the first 50 pages were so boring but then it picked up and never slowed down again i really loved this book i felt all the emotions the storytelling is really good and i actually understood what was going on also i feel like this was a perfect first book it did what all first books of series should do and set up the next books well i read a library copy but i might buy it also idk why but the darklings ideology and this whole kingdom set up gave me major AOT vibes

So fun! Predictable and a bit light on world building, but I had a good time reading it.

Biggest complaint is that I really hate Mal. That guy is just the worst.

Almost a bit too fast paced, but I still enjoyed it. It’s no secret that YA fantasies typically don’t wow me so I’m not surprised that I gave this an average rating, but I thought the characters were interesting. I’m hoping I like the other two books in the series a bit more, but for an early 2010s book in a genre I don’t usually like, I’m pretty satisfied.
