Another stunning story

The second in the series, I enjoyed this as much as the first. It gave a detailed view of an aspect we often know little about: how the south handled post war relationships between former slaves and former slave owners.

Fantastically heartbreaking and heartwarming ...

At the same time. Story follows on the lives or Lisbeth and Mattie only told from Jordan’s point of view this time instead of Matties. Set post civil war it tells the story of Mattie and Lisbeth separately taking their families back to Virginia where they escaped from 20 yr ago.
I was worried that this book wouldn’t live up to Yellow Crocus as the first part of the story is so poignant and tender but it absolutely did.

An emotional sequel to Yellow Crocus. Getting to see Lisabeth and Mattie come together brings so much joy and happiness. It’s sad though that even today blacks and women fight for equal rights even after a century of fighting for those rights. I hope that the author continues to write about their journey and what is next for them! Definitely a great/ must read!!!

It had a bit of a slow start, but a fantastic sequel to The Yellow Crocus.

Laila Ibrahim has quickly become one of my favorite authors. He ability to widen your view as a 21st century reader is nothing short of magic. Her books promise to transport you to times, places, & people you would otherwise be blind to. This book is no exception. Both Mustard Seed and Yellow Crocus were books that will stay with me. The stories and trials of this mismatched family are all too real to my heart, and help me to better understand such a brutal reality of the past.

I absolutely loved this book. I downloaded and read it in a single night. I love the way this author takes on history and it really gave me a better perspective on how the civil war affected others.

The complex relationships between characters - adults and children, men and women, Black and white - are astounding. Ibrahim navigates the tension, tragedy, and joy of this time effortlessly.
